House garden plants are sensitive and always seek as much sunshine and full sun exposure as possible. Don't plant in heavy shade. Plant in groups so that they grow best, and if you want your garden to be a public attraction make it attractive.

Wood is always an option, but you can keep it naturally beautiful with a little knowledge and a lot of time. Select a large enough piece and be sure that you either don't set it on edge or that you find the correct angle.

**POINT OF VIEW**

**WHEN YOU ARE CHOOSING A VARIETY OF PLANTS** it is helpful to consider what your point of view is, what will you enjoy seeing? Do you want the tropical look of many or a more mild look? Perhaps you prefer geometric shapes.

Think about your point of view and select the plant(s) that will provide the backdrop for all these preferences.

Make sure that you set it securely in its new home and fill with a suitable soil.

### PONDS

When you are creating a pond for water lilies, frogs and other aquatic plants that require the water's surface to be at the level of the leaves, a pond liner is the best option. Pond liners are permeable and they also help to conserve water and maintain your pond's filtration. The most popular type is clear in color, as this allows sunlight to penetrate the water. When your pond is ready, if you are using peat, soil, or sand as your bed, it will need to be turned every year. In spring or in fall, add a third of the water in the pond. Keep the top 6 to 8 inches covered with peat or some other filter medium to prevent any light pollution.

### PLANT PERFORMANCE

As a growing plant increases, water and nutrients are needed more, but you can also look at it as a selling opportunity. It is the only plant that grows during the summer in America, but it is a plant that will not be popular with the folks with their windows open or air-conditioning running. If you can turn the hot summer days into cool evenings, this plant can be viewed and appreciated.

It's a symbiotic relationship. You are growing with and supporting the best plant in the United States.

### AIR POLLUTION

As we have already seen, when people move to the suburbs, they abandon their "dirty commodes." The number of vehicles and paved areas take the place of out-of-doors living. With more impervious surfaces (such as paved areas, curbs, and driveways) being constructed, more of the plants in our gardens are no longer given proper air circulation, which leads to other issues such as disease and insect pests. You can create an environment that is more welcoming by adding native plants to your planting plan.

### HEALTHY HOMES

To avoid chemical run-offs into our streams and waters, many of us would like to create healthier living environments. Plants that act as air purifiers, healthy food growers, and save us money through the properties of drought and drought resistance are needed more than ever.

### FLOWERS

Flowers can be as beautiful in spring as the bridesmaids are in her wedding dress, they provide an upbeat color look in the changing seasons and they work as amazing conversation starters. They are ever changing in their expressions. Flowers have so many uses and many are out there for you to select from. The French have their _grand bouquet_ and an arrangement. You will learn of floral displays at your local courthouse. Our greatest storyteller, Chaucer, in _The Canterbury Tales_ wrote, "And from the prioress's hand was a flowred gode wyf [godly young lady], than whilom was a moor."[10]

Flowers are important for more than just their aesthetics, they also serve to do our thinking and can remind us that we are alive, connected and that we should feel that the earth is the greatest garden in the world.

## **CHAPTER 3

SOWING SEEDS**

### HOW TO GROW SEEDS

### SOWING SEEDS

An understanding of how to grow seeds, when and how to plant them, how to sow them, when to put out the seedlings and how to manage them through to the first blooming, all come with age.

There are many sites online offering excellent information about growing your own seedlings or preparing seedbeds and growing conditions. With all the advances in the science of gardening, there is a whole field of people that have written about gardening that may be of value to you. There are also great books and manuals on this topic. The following pages are about good seed-starting and seedling care and are written for novices and seasoned pros.

There are many choices of how to sow seeds, methods range from a very successful homemade starter to buying your seeds in packages. Some seeds are meant to be scattered, and then it's a matter of how and when to thin them out. Some seeds will be best sown in rows in one single layer, and others may be more suited to a dense planting. Once the seeds are in the ground, watering is critical. It's about creating a balanced environment for growing plants from seed. The better you understand the seed-starting process and the seedlings that develop, the better and more productive your garden will be.

### **BREEDS AND VARIETIES**

Most of the seeds that we have today were bred from, selected and created from, and are from wild plants. The more diverse your garden is, the more colorful your planting will be. It's a win-win situation, because then you won't have to spend so much money on seeds. And the more seeds you can get from less money, the more you will spend on your planting and maintenance expenses. Gardeners who grow a number of seed types and hybrids into their gardens and then grow them from seed at the same time all have this in
